Florida Chi Hosts Anti-Hazing Presentation at UTampa.

Updated: Mar 9

The Florida Chi Emerging Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon hosted an Anti-Hazing presentaiton at UTampa. Special guest Lianne Kowiak spoke to over 100 Greek brothers about the affect that hazing has on family and friends.

Lianne lost her 19 year-old son Harrison to a needless hazing incident in 2008. Her story of losing her son was heartbreaking, as she told us how his death affected the daughter that will never have a brother, a father that lost his only son, and a mother who is still grieving from the loss of such a good young man with endless potential.

While her story is tragic, it also offers hope. Lianne points to what we can do now to end hazing. Lianne's actions were both poignant and exceptional from the moment she got "the phone call no parent ever wants to hear." Lianne and the entire Kowiak family took the the time to heal from such a needless loss, and then moved forward to teach and educate the world about hazing by harnessing the love they have for Harrision.

Lianne's commitment to educating the Greek System is dynamic. We can all end hazing forever by adopting a "zero tolerance" to hazing, voting for legislation on the local, state and federal level and maintaining strong grass roots support through open communication and education.

As Lianne Kowaki stated, "We all have a part in saving lives."
